Benjamin M Johnson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was raised in southern New Jersey. He studied painting at The University of the Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he was awarded a European travel scholarship that greatly informed the direction of his work. Benjamin’s highly detailed oil paintings are inspired by the natural world and our place in it. He often incorporates scientific or historical themes, and frequently collaborates with field researchers, including a multi-year project studying the ecology and archaeology of the Gran Desierto de Altar in Sonora Mexico. Benjamin currently lives and works in Tucson, Arizona. He exhibits his work internationally, and travels frequently to explore wild places and channel those experiences into his signature, photo-realistic paintings.
